In 2007, founding Firegarden member James Jeffery had announced his intention to spend some time travelling. Although James remained a part of the band until August 2008, we all felt that his October 2007 leaving party at the Boardwalk, Sheffield marked the end of an era, so we decided to commit the achievements of the Mark VII and VIII versions of Firegarden to disc. Silence and Preparation X had been written by the Mark VII line-up, which had seen the addition of Gaz Hunt on drums and Andy Gotteri on keys alongside James Jeffery (bass/vocals) and Jake Mann (guitar). Ashley Tuck returned to the drums for the Mark VIII version of the band, and it was this version that wrote the rest of the songs and recorded the album. A week before we recorded we had only 30 minutes of music for the album, so in the last rehearsal we arranged all the various riffs and discarded bits of songs into the epic In This Darkness. In This Darkness has proved to be one of Firegarden's most durable compositions, and was re-recorded along with this album's The Circle for the 2015 release Choose Your Own Adventure. This album was also the last Firegarden would record with long-time collaborator James Singleton. God bless you Boothesby.
